Why is Join Africa putting the safari guide first?

Most travellers think that once they’ve chosen the country, lodge and itinerary, the trip is set. In Africa, and especially on safari, there’s one decision that matters just as much, if not more: your guide. Yet most people arrive without ever knowing who that person is. They’ve booked, paid and planned, but the individual who will shape their entire experience remains a stranger. This doesn’t reflect reality on the ground. A guide determines what you see, what you learn and what stays with you long after you leave. Join Africa was built to change that. By putting guides at the centre of the booking journey, we give travellers the ability to see, understand and choose the people behind the experience before they travel. It’s a simple shift, but one that transforms how Africa is explored and remembered.

Most travellers think once they’ve chosen the country, hotel and restaurant everything is set for a great trip. In Africa, and especially on safari, there’s one more decision that makes all the difference: your guide. Most people who travel to Africa have no idea who their guide is until they land.

They've booked a trip, paid a deposit, exchanged a few emails with an operator, but the person who will actually be with them in the bush, on the water or on the road is still a stranger. This is no small thing because your guide shapes everything. The stories you hear, the animals you find, the moments that make you call your friends or family when you get home. The guide is an integral part of the safari experience and for most travellers meeting them is an afterthought. This doesn’t make sense and this is why we built Join Africa.

Our journey started in 2022 when Paul English, founder of Kayak and Boston Venture Studios, travelled to the Maasai Mara and realised how overlooked guides were in the travel tech ecosystem. Working with Ben Peterson, CEO of Purple Elephant Ventures, the idea of Join Africa was born and we officially launched the app for safari guides in July 2025. Shortly after we built out our online platform as we realised that this guide databased offered a unique opportunity for us to showcase Africa differently.

Our mission is simple, Africa's tourism industry is full of remarkable people who have spent their lives learning this landscape, this ecosystem, this culture. They know things that don't appear in any guidebook and for too long they've been invisible in the booking process, hidden behind operator names and package descriptions.

We're here to change that. Every guide on our platform has a profile from photos to reviews, their background, what they specialise in, where they operate. Before you book anything, you can see who you're going with. Not just which company. We're not the first platform for African travel. But we might be the first to help you book a truly tailored safari.

If you're planning a trip to Africa, we'd love for you to start with the guides. Browse them. Read their reviews. See where they've taken people and what those people said when they got back. Then book.

It's a small shift in how you plan. It makes a big difference in what you experience.

Welcome to Join Africa.
